Google needs an app registration before Fieldnotes can request access to your documents. These steps are for your private reader.

1. Create a Google Cloud project.

   Open Google Cloud Console ↗ using the account that owns your Docs. Name the project Fieldnotes Reader, or select a project you already manage.

2. Enable the two APIs in that project.

   Open and enable Google Drive API ↗ and Google Docs API ↗. Check the project selector on each page.

3. Set up the consent screen.

   In Google Auth Platform ↗, choose Get started. App name: Fieldnotes Reader. Use your email for support and contact. For a personal Google account, choose External. Under Audience, keep Testing and add your Google email as a Test user. Review Google’s terms yourself.

4. Add read-only access.

   In Data Access → Add or remove scopes, add these scopes and save:

   This lets the reader identify your account, list file metadata, and read Google Docs. It cannot edit your documents.

5. Create a Web application client.

   In Clients → Create client, choose Web application. Name it Fieldnotes Reader. Leave JavaScript origins empty. Under Authorized redirect URIs, paste this exact address:

   If Google rejects the temporary hostname, we’ll connect a domain you own and update this address.

6. Download the credentials JSON.

   After creating the client, download its JSON immediately—Google may only show the secret at creation. On iPhone, save it in Files. Import it below, then sign in and approve the requested read-only permissions.

In Google’s Testing mode, access usually expires after seven days. You may need to sign in again. Google’s OAuth documentation ↗

Your existing Google app is connected to the server. Finish its Google settings once, then use Sign in with Google.

1. Add the reader’s address.

   Open your existing Google client ↗. Under Authorized redirect URIs, choose Add URI, paste the address below, and Save. Keep the existing addresses.

2. Allow Google Docs access.

   Open Google Drive API ↗ and Google Docs API ↗. Tap Enable on each if it is not already enabled.

We’ll check that Google accepts the reader’s address before sending you to sign in. If Google says the app is limited to test users, add your allowed account in the project’s Audience settings.
